You may be aware that one of the interisland ferries, the Kaiarahi has experienced problems with her gearbox and has been out of service while the extent of the mechanical problem was assessed. That diagnostic work is continuing but it is already clear that it will be weeks, not days until Kaiarahi returns to service.
A further challenge for strait operators will come in the near future when Aratere needs to go to Sydney for dry dock work on 20 September. In order to comply with maritime flag requirements. Kiwirail confirm the timing of this dry dock cannot be avoided or deferred. RTANZ has been advised Aratere will be returning to NZ to resume sailings from the 2 October.
As a result, there will be only a single vessel running for that period. Kiwirail have advised “they will be unable to honour your bookings with us from 20 Sept to 02 Oct and these bookings will need to be either transferred to a date after the 02 Oct or cancelled”. RTANZ understands that extra crossings may be available on alternate days to assist with freight requirements.
Please contact the booking team on 0800 660 670 or email them at [email protected] to manage your bookings.
RTANZ recommends that transport operators phone to confirm bookings with Kiwirail as soon as you are able to. Any unsecured bookings will be reallocated.
Kiwirail and Interislander sincerely apologise for the disruption to your business during this period.
